Quote from masternick :cant wait, smoke change looks decent

also wtb more steering lock:P

I was just thinking whether the steering wheel will have 720° or actual steering wheel degrees of the car. I guess it'll be a surprise!

I finally found the character map in accessories. Now I can type with symbols!

Has separate coastal meets been proposed yet? In CA Buttonwillow would be the best place for north and south drive. There could be separate west coast, Central, and east coast meets.

Gran Turismo is most likely what gave me my intrest in classical and jaz music. The lobby music is always a good background music when clicking through menus. Sometimes I'll pop GT2 into my backwards compatible PS3 just to listen to the music, and race on Grindalwald.

LFS definitely does teach how to drive closer to the limit in RL. Not because the physics, but the techniques and reaction times are similar to RL. Racing craft isn't the only useful skill that is transferable. The limit of grip may not be the same, but managing grip is similar.

I don't think someone that has only played LFS could jump into a car or a go-kart and drive at the limit. However, in my case practicing with LFS definitely gave me the "know how" when I first went to a real kart track with a real racing go-kart (80cc shifter).

While racing there is psychological pressure to drive faster which makes driving precisely harder. Trail-braking into corners is a bit difficult, and while racing it is more so. I decided to add more parallel steer which has added a bit more stability to more than just trail-braking with both cars.

Also, for the XRT, the suspension was stiffer than I wanted it to be. After readjusting the suspension, the car transitioned into slides more gradually making it easier to manage exit over-steer.

I would like to make low differential lock setups for the front wheel drive cars, but low lock is too much of a disadvantage compared to high lock.

This is just speculation. I think all of the down-force cars will be rejuvenated with the new tire physics. Those cars take better advantage when using the exploits. With an exploit setup and down-force, people can keep pushing towards(never achieving) the infinite load that the tires are able to withstand and still provide grip.

It could go either way actually. Putting toe-in on the rear limits the tire's slip-angle. While grip is maintained, the car is more stable. However, the car will break grip with less angle of the whole car in a corner. While toe-out will allow more angle of the whole car in a corner, without breaking grip; but make it more unstable.

I thought toe-out in the rear induces more axial rotation. And that rotational momentum would cause over-steer.

You put your left-toe in, for stable entry turning left.
You take your left-toe out, for early turn-in response turning left.(nascar)
You put your left-toe in and you shake the steering wheel all about,
You do the wobble wobblies and you spin yourself around,
That's what it's all about!

You're right about unfocused areas and really high speed objects getting blurry.

As for DOF in games when looking at any sort of monitor, tv, or projection screen, the parts that are not in my focus are already blurry. Why would the effect need to be doubled? All it does is block vision. Even if it gets implemented with eye tracking it would be pointless, since anything not being focused on will already be blurry because those areas are not being looked at. The only effect DOF will accomplish is limit peripheral vision. Effectively limiting visual situational awareness.

As for MB in games, at 120 mph and slower, things are not "motion blurred" in my peripheral vision. I cannot say about 121+mph as I have not driven that fast. In racing games MB should definitely not kick in until at least then. I don't know at what speed peripheral vision gets blurry.

I my experience with Toe adjustments, and how they effect the feel of a car in LFS, using: really high diff-lock, soft front-end, and stiff rear-end makes geometry adjustments seem useless. If the car is reliant on the suspension for stability instead of the differential, geometry adjustments are much more noticeable, especially on the front end.

...and that's what it's all about...

There is a limit to how much toe-out is beneficial. This is dependent on how much parallel steering (aka. Ackerman) the car has. More parallel steer will benefit from more toe-out. Less parallel steer; the inside tire will drag more with more toe-out.

then you turn yourself around...

I don't understand why people would want DOF or Motion Blur in a game. But then again I don't understand why people hang little plushies from bumper of their car. How those two relate is that they are both aesthetic and do not improve the object they are applied to.

Situational awareness was ruined when COD implemented DOF. I am never looking at where my cross-hair is pointed at, when I'm not aiming at a target. Once that was implemented the already limited situational awareness was impaired even further.

It is good when people decide things for them selves. However, in the case of reality, some people just need to be told to understand what is real and what is just delusion. Someone needs to get across that DOF or MB are not realistic effects that people see with their eyes.

I visual effects should be used for film. There is no place for DOF or motion blur through current gaming mediums.

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread that has no point now because of the patch that might come out, but I have some more setups. I have been having the most fun with LFS racing the XRT/XRG with these setups on IHR's server recently. I have actually beat most of my old PB's with these setups because there are no special exploits to drive them fast.

Driving these setups quickly is very straight forward. Reading the grip with these setups is really easy. This is what makes the setups easy to drive. When maximum grip is not obtained or has been slightly exceeded, it is easy to notice. Small mistakes are obvious therefore it is easy to correct them on the next lap. However, racing them precisely and competitively is a challenge. The challenge to learn and drive these setups competitively makes for great fun. Each lap completed without making a mistake gives a feeling of great satisfaction.

The focus is on the suspension and geometry so that they dictate all or most of the way the car performs. The cars are tuned to stabilize on partial throttle with a little bit of "push". When the cars starts to push too much mid-corner, lifting the throttle a bit will set the car back into the corner. Stabbing or blipping the throttle will also counteract under-steer. In high-speed corners the cars are stable to hold the rear end on line at full throttle. Trail-braking the cars into corners can be challenging. Any mistake will put the car off line when the rear end steps out.

To drive these setups with the proper feel; a steering ratio of 14.4:1 is required. The steering ratio is set to 14.4:1 at 720 degrees. Too little steering degrees; the car will be very unstable and extremely twitchy on the brakes. Too many steering degrees; the car will under-steer, but when it slides it will be difficult to manage. If the steering degrees are changed, a 14.4:1 steering ratio must be maintained (by adjusting max lock) to keep the same feel. (minimum of 540 degrees of steering. 400:~14, 300:~10, or 200:~7 have too small max lock)

[900 deg:~31 max lock =14.5:1 ; 540 deg:~19 max lock =14.2;1]

I don't know if anybody will like these setups, or even drive them for that matter. But if this thread is stumbled upon, and my "long" essay has been read to this point, I hope somebody gets the same enjoyment and satisfaction that I get while racing with these setups. For me there is new life breathed into LFS, even without the new patch.

I was not attacking you yeager, I just disagreed with the communication part of your post. I directed my later comments towards "those people" that do complain. I should have segmented my post as to not combine my response to you with my rant. Your post had no complaint in it. I am sorry if i was you who I offended.

Edit: It is for anyone else who might read it. If it's not you, then it doesn't apply

As for the successful business of LFS, who knows what the devs have planed for LFS as a business. It seems to me LFS started out as a project that they just wanted to do, and sold it in early stages to get some funding to pursue their project further. And by my inferences on the way they develop LFS, it seems money making is not the main reason they want to develop such a game. Otherwise they would market their game more intensively.

I have not owned or ran a successful business, but I have worked at a fairly successful small business and know what they do to advertise their product to their market. I actually manned one of their booths at a trade-show.

The surprise way of thinking is the way I think of LFS progress. I don't think I could play any other sim as seriously as I play LFS.

My posts in this thread are just as much clutter as any other, but it always gets worse before it can get better.

Quote from pik_d :That's kind of the point of this question. If you disadvantage someone else (so that those 10+ other competitors pass THEM because of what you did), are you willing to put yourself that far back just so that one person you put off can re-pass you?

If I might have potentially killed the other competitor I would stop immediately. If not, and my kart is undamaged, I would continue.

In the case of LFS, for along time now, I have not rammed anyone on accident or very hard. Unless it is a rear end tap on exit I keep my space while racing. If I end up putting some one off while racing side by side mid corner it is most likely a lag crash. In that case I would not stop.

Off topic:

Something I hate in LFS are those people who push their luck racing too close side by side with a lot of light contact even on the straights and braking zones. Eventually lag puts me in the dirt in the braking zones/the person complains that I crashed them, or we both get taken out of the race and they complain that I took us out.

I disagree that complaining is down to dis-communication.

The only reason some people feel compelled to complain/gripe/wine/cry over LFS updates is because there is a possibility that the developers will continue to improve what they have already made. Since there are those people who don't think about why they want to gripe publicly, the rest of the forum community have to scroll through pointless posts to get to something interesting. These people don't understand that it is just impulsive, because it is pointless and will go nowhere.

Please stop cluttering our forums.

Why are there any frustrations about updates in LFS, or for any game for that mater? For what it is worth the "SCAVIER"team could stop working on their sim project and LFS would be just like any other racing game that you may have in your stockpile of racing games. We didn't pay 24 pounds for future LFS, we paid for the game as it is, or was. The price hasn't even gone up to account for inflation. Buying LFS because you expect some sort of updates has been a gamble since the beginning. However, I would be bummed if they stopped. I'm gambling right now with good odds, it'll just take a while.

Here are some words of advice.

The 3 (and only) ways to get individual(s) to do what you want:
  1. Motivation: Find a way to get the individual(s) to want what you want. (most important)
  2. Suggestion: Communicate your idea calmly, without complaint, to the individual(s), and wait to see if they agree.
  3. Demand: Force the individual(s) to do what you want. (works only if there is leverage on the individual(s))
Anything not on this list is just pure griping. I classify griping as an alternative to suggesting or demanding for those who have childlike minds. Since people know demanding like children will get nowhere, they choose to gripe. Adults or grown adolescent kids who gripe are just like children making demands to their parents for the candy bar in the grocery store. A gripe is the same as a tantrum. It is compulsive complaining that leads to nothing and makes those people look like children in public. Those people may be able to get away with that on forums, but I as sure as hell hope those people don't do it in the workplace or at an education facility. If you are someone who would gripe, go to your mirror in your washroom and look at yourself while you gripe about something. Or you could just read one of your posts to yourself in front of the mirror.

I would let the person pass only because this is sim racing. However, in karting (the only real racing I have done) I would continue on for the chance that it was not seen as my fault. If you wait, in karting, for the person to recover you will most likely get passed by 10+ other competitors.
