You can if you turn the chip off.

Don't get me wrong, I have non-onboard sound too but making such claims as those, with those speakers is a bit much.

Quote from dougie-lampkin :Seriously, what do you need? You say you have a TV that has what you need
  • PS3 can be used on standard composite (SCART) - EVERY TV has one (or several)!
  • Normal TV can be watched through standard co-ax (It's a TV after all!)
  • PC can be used through VGA
  • DVDs can be watched on either PS3 or PC through their respective feeds, or else have a DVD player using the composite as well...
  • Videos can again be watched through normal composite or SCART...

That's all for the TV though dude, we're talking about a standard monitor here.

Here's my take on it.

Use the PC for DVDs, get a USB TV adapter for TV, if you're talking about VHS, don't bother trying.

PS3, no idea. If they do a VGA cable like the xbox then use that.

Quote from spacedskunk :Quite good, but tbh 2.1, a decent set is just as good and not to say 'decent' means expensive. Even better is some very good headphones I guess, like Sennheisers.

I have a Logitech 2.1 X-230 system running through an X-Fi Fatality Pro card, they sound f**king amazing tbh, I've had them for a few years now and the ONLY upgrade I have been thinking about is these speakers but from 2.1 to 5.1 setup.

The X-fi card too, as I am sure with some slightly older soundblasters have CMSS-3D, which ups 2.1 games to 5.1 with good results, and even ups sound quality through the Crystalizer option...which actually works

Basically though my point is, the sound from these speakers is only as good as what your computer outputs. You'd be surprised just how much difference there is from onboard sound (even high def) to a decent sound card such as x-fi. I was amazed

Placebo effect FTW.

...Except then you wouldn't be driving it. Unless you were the driver of said bus. Or it was your bus, I don't know how bus companies work, do you drive one bus all the time? Oh god I've gotten out of my depth.

It's a set back, and it'll take time, but it'll be worth it, you know that.
Component to VGA

Quick question here, I have an Xbox360 winging its way to me this week, and could play it on the main TV but would like to use it in my room if possible.

If I bought a component to VGA cable, would I be able to use it with my VGA monitor does anybody reckon? They claim they work both ways, tbh I know nothing about the signals other than they are both analogue (and both RBG?!). Obviously sound would have to be sorted out some other way, but I can do that easily enough.

(I believe the DVI port/circuitry is busted on this monitor as nothing happens with a DVI input).

EDIT: 2 seconds later, stupid me remembers you can get an official VGA cable for the 360. GG memory.

Gutted for you man. Might not all be bad though, you always hear of piss-poor insurance payouts, but I know of some good ones.

Quote from avellis :That's pretty innacurate.

Xbox can indeed use a component cable setup and upscale to 720p or 1080i, when in NTSC mode. BUT, its CPU is pretty low and in fact it cannot even cope with 720p content. 1080p is, of course, out of the question.

Some crazy people, I've read, have modified the xbox's cpu so that it can do HighDef.

Don't get me wrong, Xbox is an excellent media centre. Just not for HighDef.

XBMC isn't upscaled though man, the 'OS' itself if you like can be displayed in HD (I have mine in 720p) but as you say, most of the content isn't. I suppose you could look at pictures better and browse the web more easily if you wished.

There's a reason it's cheap...:P Not saying that's a bad thing necessarily, got the 28" wide flatscreen CRT in our student house for £30.

Yer back in the day we used to use XBConnect to play Halo/Halo2 online but it could be a pain to use sometimes. When it did work though it was a bit of a laugh

I'd go with, and have got, XBMC which is truely excellent for a media center. Does everything I'd want it to and is proper easy to use.

Quote from Bladerunner :Dig around the used games bin at Game or Blockbuster..Emmy recently grabbed 5 games including Lego Star Wars (6 episodes!!! Brill!!),Driv3r (crap!), Unreal Championship and Splinter Cell for £10!!!!

The full 6 ep version of Lego Star Wars is awesome , my housemate has it for the Wii and it was a great laugh playing through it. Can't wait for Lego Indiana Jones

Erm well

a) You won't sell it for £80, but you knew that.
b) Chips are still expensive, £30-40 - I did my executor3 years ago and still have my xbox being used as a media center. The best thing you can do really, or
c) Softmod it, but I don't know how easy or reliable that is, you'd need to get hold of a few things first that would probs cost around £20 posted anyway.

You could also, strip the case out and fit a proper pc in there as I once did, but then got very bored of that project and left it.

Gave the demo a go earlier today. Now anyone who's read my posts about DiRtTtTtT will know how I feel about Codemasters current attempts, and obviously this is hardly any different.

However it was quite fun to go online with only a 30 second wait and get straight into racing/wrecking - because the damage is again, good.

Quote from mcgas001 :See, Thats why deisels reward you. £35 a year is a heck of a lot cheaper then my £110 for a year.

Sorry you seem to have overlooked the fact that Dan literally just said the diesel clio will do 70mpg, whereas a petrol equivalent would do around 45-50 I guess. That seems like a reward to me.

Sorry how would you know if it helped the OP or not? Are you the OP? No, so be quiet and go and sit in the corner like a good 14 year old.

Yer I don't think your view has helped anyone.

I'll be getting a 360 after exams, not going to bother until then. Price + games sway it for me personally.

Quote from JamesF1 :Good luck.

Good luck, unless you have been doing Maths at A-Level and take electric engineering, you're unlikely to get much hands-on hardware work. Most Computer Science degrees will give you next to no hands-on hardware interaction - you'll be doing a lot of writing, and a hell of a lot of mathematical theory.

Eeeeeeees not wrong.

Also 20K words? Why? If that's like 20k words including code then yes maybe, but we didn't do anything near that when I did Comp, Maths and even Geography (which is a very wordy subject). I can't ever see that much being needed. Yer we did a year project designing what I can only describe as a dodgy-as-feck back-office system, but I don't remember it needing 20k words of documentation. And I got an A.

I actually have an account on a browser-based game atm, 'Ikariam'. Surprisingly it's been done pretty nicely, it's fairly hard to explain how it works though, you have to try it out yourself to see.
