Remember, it's unlikely you have a PCIe power cable (especially if it came with a 7300), if so you'll need something that doesn't require external power.
...and there's very little point in buying a card from 3 generations ago tbh...
...and today was the day. There's no way I'll be able to afford the new Geforce 400 series at launch, so I plumped for a nice shiny new ATI 5850 today, and dropped in a new PSU as the old Hiper is a bit less than legit.
Specs are now:
Mobo: ASUS P5B Deluxe
CPU: Intel Q9550
RAM: 8GB Crucial Ballistix
GFX: ASUS 5850 1GB
PSU: Corsair HX 650
HDD: 2x Samsung F3 1TB in RAID0
And I think... that's just about all you can do with LGA775
I just got 2 F3 1TBs yesterday and popped them in RAID 0, 380MB/s burst, 240MB/s average read speeds. Not too shabby at all - and more than enough for video (the write speed is good too).
Couldn't afford a full upgrade so today swapped out my E6600 for a Q9550, moved up to 8GB Crucial Ballistix and dual Samsung F3 1TBs in RAID 0. Just need to replace the graphics card some time in the next couple of months.
Exactly, seems to me like you just want to change for the sake of changing. Stick with what you've got until you're old enough to afford something newer and better. Hell I had a 15yr old Fiesta until I turned 22 back in December, now I've saved up enough to buy and own a few year old Golf, which is comfortable, kitted out and stupidly quick to boot.
Makes sense really, I could have burnt money getting something intermediate when I was younger, but there was no point really, other than for change.
In my old fiesta you could stamp on the brakes and they might eventually bring you to a stop - I nearly threw my passenger through the front windscreen the first time I stopped in my new Golf :/
