Hehe! Way to go on the open mind!
Just kidding, we all have our priorities. I know I'm jumping at the chance to try the new Niels masterpieces. The C6 is awesome!
Could a mod please close this thread? I hoped my point would be taken, but as I was afraid, it wasn't. I'm sorry I posted this, there's just no getting through to you guys...
Scawen, I hope you see my point the way I meant it, the fanboys sure didn't!
I knew the title would provoke alot of people. I am in no way implying that Nicole is to 'blame' for the decline of LFS. The slow development cycle is. I am a father. I love my children, and I want to spend as much time with them as I can. I am absolutely certain Scawen is a wonderful father as well, and will want to spend time too. So the development time will get further reduced. This is in no way the children's fault. It's not Scawen's fault. It's just the way it is. Less development means less interest.
And regarding content, I'm not so sure it's a lack of content either. To me LFS is just static. Always the same weather, always the same temperature, always the same everything. With other completed games I get changing temperatures that affect my grip, my engine cooling and hence my driving. I get changing time of day that means I cannot use shadows as my brake marker, the added immersion from seeing the early morning long shadows when in practice, the midday sun in qualifying, the longer shadows as the race progress. My brakes will fade if I overuse them, my engine will overheat if I abuse it. And even the same track can feel totally different if it's a cold morning or a warm summer afternoon.
The LFS physics that's there is fine. The LFS tracks that are there is fine. There's just so many little things that are missing. It's static. The way you can tweak your setup to perfection is not a good thing, imo. It just show how static things are. People are whining when I run with wind on, because suddenly they have to take the second right at BL1 2kph slower than they use to and they can't adapt. Not a LFS flaw in itself, but the static conditions of LFS promote this behaviour.
We have tire flatspots, which are great. One incident under braking can make or break your race. That incident could make you have to ease off a little for a few laps. Great! More of that! What if we had brake temperatures modelled as well? Maybe for a track that's tough on brakes you'd have to ease off a little to cool your brakes. For the road cars this is a real problem, especially the way we drive the cars in LFS. I've never driven a real racecar, so I have no basis to say anything about them. I do know that even F1, the technological pinnacle of motorsports have brake trouble from time to time.
I'd be delighted if I was in a heated battle with my closest rival suddenly felt my car lurch, shudder and die due to an electrical problem. Because next time it could happen to my rival. Stuff happens in racing. Stuff very rarely happen in LFS...
Edit: Bob's post came while I was Writing this.
I agree with you Bob. It's now anyone's fault. It's just the way it is. I want to make it absolutely clear that I'm not blaming anyone for anything. I'd blame Scawen more if he didn't take time off with his baby and family.
Ok, first let me clarify that this is no attack on Scawen or any of the people involved in the development of LFS. It's your lives, your families and your time.
I am a little concerned with the pace of development of LFS. Scawen just had another baby, and being the father of three I know how much time this takes, no matter how 'nice' and 'easy' the baby is. We've seen a slowdown in development the last years, and I see no reason to think the pace will pick up. No matter how far your head is stuck in the sandpit of LFS, you gotta see that other titles are catching up. That in itself does in no way make LFS any worse. I still think it's one of the best sims there is.
With the current development pace we will not see much progress at all, unless there is a large amount of incompatible changes that we haven't seen, for a long while yet. I for one am playing other titles when I race at all. I know many still get alot of enjoyment out of LFS, and I still do at times, but the current content will go stale eventually.
I'm just worried that this is the beginning of the end of a wonderful adventure. I've been around since the first public demo, and I've seen this game grow from the raw, homemade, awesome little demo it was, into the pretty mature, and slightly boring grownup.
I see Scawen nibbling away at small, insignificant issues. I keep hearing about new content. I keep seeing the same tracks, the same cars, the same races.
I know I am being slightly unfair here. I know the developmnt team is small. I know hacking away at the same stuff for months can drive a man up the wall. I guess what we're seing in the patches is the compatible fruits of some 'bored with the big stuff' bughunting and code optimizations that just turn into other things. I know ho programming goes, and can lead you off the intended development plan when you get bored. It's stuff that needs to be done, I know this.
Still... I have a nagging concern that it's not going to pick up. We're not going to get another flurry of patches, forum crazyness, weeks of speculation and devs toying with us about a new patch that they are obviously very proud of and can't wait to show us. No more hints in screenshots. No more Blackwood Gurus... Sad really...
When i first wrapped my head around the concept of spoilers vs wings I though about planes. Imagine a car's cross section as a wing. Just like on your average Cessna. See the similarity? Ok.
Now, imagine another, smaller wing, mounted on top of the wing, but turned upside down, so the flat part is turned upwards. The main wing will lift, the little wing will push down on it.
Now, remove the small wing, and add a spoiler instead. Now, on planes, a spoiler is a small plate that rise from the wing surface to break the airflow over it, effectively stalling it. That is exactly what a spoiler on a car does too, it 'stalls' it, so it creates less lift. See the difference? One create a separate force acting opposite the lift, the other destroys the lift of the original shape.
No, they weren't. I had missed the warning about no access to the system32 folder and assumed the files were copied. My bad. Not used to being babysat to this level before (new Vista user).
Hehe.. Come to me when a rotary have pistons and rods to blow...
Still, I think the simplified way rFactor does engine damage actually works. There's a factor for revs and 'life' of the engine. Going with higher oil and water temps than optimum will decrease 'life' of the engine faster than going at and under optimum. That way over-revving will bring oil temps up and thus shorten life considerably. Likewise, water temps. rF also have radiator size as a parameter, and dirty air will make the radiator less effective. Makes for more interesting racing, as going bumper to bumper for too long might bring water temps up too high and blow the engine. Also, oil temps will be too high if you constantly over-rev the engine, or ride the limiter on straights.
It's not perfect, but it's simple, and it works.
Well.... I've seen alot of 'lets destroy this engine' videos on youtube, and most of them get real boring.. It takes quite some time with an enginge bouncing off the limiter for it to even show signs of distress. I'd think you'd have to REALLY abuse your engine for it to be damaged. Especially in the road cars. The race cars are closer to the structural limit and will damage more easily if abused. I guess water and oil temperatures will take care of that. rigth now revs is the only parameter we have to damage the engine by.
Well.... Reality check, dude. Do you actually think that real life is optimal to the 3rd decimal at all times? What will you do when we get changing temperatures and conditions? Find a setup that does better, drive the car harder, or just cope. You might lose 0.1s, but there might be a good battle there. Isn't that better than hotlapping?
I just don't get how you guys can't afford S1. That sounds like a poor exuse to me. Hell, my 6 year old son could afford S1 if he wanted it bad enough. He might not get it tonight, but in a week or three. You've been playing the demo a lot longer than that, most of you. So drop the chockies and fries this weekend, or have a few less beers, and you're set for anouther year, at least. Probably alot longer. How you guys got computers in the first place is beyond me...
Edit: Damn, you make me sound like my father.. that's NOT a good thing, but you need to hear it. Sometimes it actually takes a slight bit of effort to get something you want. It's not asking for a lot.
Anyways, I can usuallt feel when I have a PB coming up, it's the best feeling ever. Or coming up to the last corner and then see you have a much better exit than the guy you have been fighting hte last 4 laps. Don't need a speedo for that!
