Quote from george_tsiros :professional designers set up the lighting conditions of their workspace very carefully.

under those conditions, glossy screens are significantly superior to matte ones.

the fact that in a photograph of the screen you see your reflection in it, doesn't mean shit about the monitor's image quality.

I know, I own both glossy and non-gloss VA panels, I like them both tbh, sometimes I prefer the glossy (mainly for gaming/movies etc) and sometimes the non-glossy works best.

Whilst I can't claim to have any professional equipment, I have steered WELL clear of TNs since my first one 4 or 5 years ago.

Doesn't look quite as good as Crysis, but still pretty good on Very High here.

My brother just picked it up for the 360 and it looks pretty good on that too.

That's cool, I meant you were doing things the right way by trying to find out more and taking in people's advice.

I was specifically talking about Shadowww giving bad advice.

Lol yer whoever though glass covered displays would be good for designers needs to be shot. I guess they're aiming more at the 'about-campus-student' these days, and less at the professional market. I don't know the facts of the MBP but I expect it's TN, Apple like to skimp out on their displays.

I will say this now, whilst that is of course a v. good PSU - modular PSUs ftw. Wire management is far far easier.

Saying stuff like a P4 would beat a C2D is what gets people confused. If you don't know what you're talking about, either ask or keep quiet. It's just confusing for other people actually trying to work out what is the best approach.

You won't listen to it all in one sitting of course, but what if you really want to listen to a track in your collection, but due to the storage being 1/10th of the size of your collection you had to leave it out? Frustrating. I duno, I just don't like being restricted. I especially don't like the write/read rate of the flash memory in the iPods/iPhone etc.

in that case id base my decision on whether or not the laptop has at the very least a decent va panel

Do any laptops have VA panels? I'd be most tempted to get a Mac or whatever laptop, then buy a proper sized panel for working on... Oh wait that's exactly what I did do

If you can get 4GB ram in there Dajmin, do so. I guess you know these things already buying a design student, but more ram never hurts with PS. I find my Macbook Pro with 2GB grinds to a halt when I've got PS and a few other apps open. Not cool.

Quote from sam93 :8GB is enough really. I was going to get a 16GB Touch but I know I wont use all the memory so I am getting the 8 gig instead. I like the apple players personally.

8GB isn't enough if you have >8GB of music though is it. Which a large number of people do. I ran out space on my old 20GB Iriver, and it's pretty annoying not having it all with you. Nowadays though I'm limited to 8GB to I have to choose more carefully what I want on there.

I've heard good things about the X5, isn't it a fair few years old now though?

Quote from S14 DRIFT :I read that you need to complete little side quests to unlock more weapons and the likes. Is this as complicated as it sounds or is it much more simple?

It's not too bad, whenever you're free you can just go and see a weapons dealer, he'll give you a mission to take out a truck of weapons being delivered by a rival dude, then that unlocks 2 or 3 new weapons for you to buy.

Quote from Dajmin :I'm picking a copy of this up tonight, but it'll be for the 360 not the PC (since I don't think my PC would like it at all). I understand the console versions are made harder (or at least more frustrating in their realism) by not having a quicksave option, so if you get taken out you can't just pop back a couple of mins and have to actually restart from a full save.

Yeah I think that's definitely something that will make it a lot harder on the console. The quicksave option on the PC basically makes the safehouses redundant, other than for changing the time of day. Still, an involving game nonetheless.

Anybody played this yet?

Been giving it a spin and it's pretty good fun, though naturally all the features such as 'removing shrapnel from yourself' get tedious very quickly. The open ended story mode seems to work well, no Crysis-style linear gameplay here.

Graphics and interface are of course very nice, control scheme is pretty dodgy at best and traveling around the 50km² map can get boring after a while.

Enemies are reasonably hard to kill, hardest setting doesn't allow for a crosshair and damage taken is heavy and fast.

Overall the RPG-cross-FPS idea is fairly well done, and makes for a pretty good game IMO.

FPS will be CPU limited with that graphics card at 1024x768. I guess around 150 with a grid or something, more than you need anyway

(The 4870 is dual slot too so if there's something in the PCI slot below you'll have to move it.)

Nice, feels almost exactly the same as mobile Safari. I call it 'mobile' Safari rather than the preferred 'full internet on your phone' as it's not - it can barely render fonts, doesn't support flash and crashes on average 16 times every minute.

This should be better - assuming it doesn't burn up all the available RAM like Firefox.

Quote from ajp71 :You're missing the point, the suggestion was to get a new head unit and keep the standard speakers, which is even more pointless than trying to get decent audio in a car.

I never said a word about speakers. Don't make things up thanks.

Quote from ajp71 :Two problems. Firstly it looks chavvy and secondly it is worth as much as the car and would significantly increase the chance of some chav taking an interest in the car.

Ooh it looks 'chavvy', you must be a chav for buying that. Who cares if you it produces 100x better audio, you must be a chav. No.

Secondly they have removable faceplates don't they.
