What is the make and model of your motherboard?

Download the intel embedded graphics driver

Start here and fill in the correct selection boxes for your hardware

http://downloadcenter.intel.co ... rt-EN_01+home_downloadctr

In your pic it says "standard VGA graphics adaptor" this should change.

Good luck

To the OP
Maybe if your a driving sim/game fan, as most of us here are, you will eventually own more than one game, so I don't see it as a choice of one or another, they all have their good and bad points, just keep collecting until you find one you enjoy.

If anyone is thinking of buying rfactor to try the much talked about "historicX" mod supposed to have nice FF and realistic cars/handling, as I did, its worth mentioning that you need to buy 2 games in order to load and play this mod (Rfactor & GTX) also you need a KB with a numpad to be able to adjust FF on the fly too

Rfactor out of the box combined with a logitech FF wheel needs alot of messing about with settings to get it to feel anywhere near realistic.

I own many racing games (except iracing) and find the only one I still play is LFS, it has IMO the best online code and the most realistic handling, especially in the road car class.

I have seen it grow and change, with many patches, and always there is a surge in online palyers after every major update, but it does seem to be at an all time low in terms of players right now, however good racing can still be found using the lfsworld buddy list and visiting the more populated servers especially in the peak (europe) times.

I think if the devs had abandoned the game (I don't think that) they would have announced it or at least not posted that they are still working on it, some people here are just negative and keep saying "it won't come" etc.
I believe an update will come, in time, and be worth the wait

These large statue/installation artists rarely bother with lightning conductors, its not like lightning is a new phenomenon or anything.

I wonder if in 2004 when built, if they did any risk assesments

Try LFS in single player mode to confirm that its online only.

Then start looking for the issue

Try a new patch cable, try it in different ports on your router/hub.

Try a new cable from router to phone line/cable box.

If you use a Z-Blocker (filter) try another one.

Maybe you have a phone or skybox or fax machine with out a Z-Blocker?

Does the hub support wireless? is it disabled? same on your PC are any wireless or unused ports disabled?

Do you have other PC's on your LAN? maybe a sibling is using P2P

If all else fails contact your ISP and get them to check the line.

It could even be something that you don't expect like a USB keyboard or wireless/bluetooth device polling the cpu

Good luck

You might be able to change your "cool & quiet" or other fan control settings, so the fan runs faster for longer, it might be found in your BIOS

Does the fan noise increase (normally you can hear it spin up when starting up) when you start lfs? it is normally linked to cpu temp sensor.

As MadCat has said load up speed fan and check all the temps, check them when idling and again with lfs running, you might have to enable the logging part (to a txt file) then when computer crashes check the last entries upon restart.

Good luck.

Martin, welcome to LFS
You can use keys 5 & 6 to change FOV on the fly, and F9-F12 to show the tyres and other "live info", and if you havn't found it already, virtual gauges and pedal bars etc can be setup in options/display.

Good luck.

I forgot to mention one important point...

Never clean or open a computer with it switched on, switch it off disconnect the plug from the wall, and with a laptop I always remove the battery, its easy to accidentially press the "on" button when cleaning.

Quote from diNOSaur :Do you guys really think that devs will just f**k it someday before releasing next patch?
Before S3 they won't.

I have no clue what is meant by that question, care to edit that, so it makes sense?

Quote from Mille Sabords :
Is there a way to reduce spam and locate easily the nice posts in here? I think it depends on us all... optimistic or pessimistic thought?

I know it was mostly retorical

However...

I think it is very optimistic to believe the feel of this forum will ever return to how it felt in the early years 2003-2006.
with the influx of so many new users finding this forum after S2A release it has diluted the interesting threads here like value squash, and "spam" has become ubiquitous.

Especially in the last couple of years it seems it has become accepted and acceptable to most, to just put up with it, but you're right it is up to us, up to us to use the report button if its needed, and make clear to those who spam repeatedly, that it is not welcome (although this course of action normally starts a 10 post argument that throws threads even more off topic)

With or without the spam there are still great threads with some gems of posts to be found from educated and knowledgeable people, i agree though it would be much less fuss without the static.

LFS dying? maybe, maybe not, but this forum is showing signs of illness.

@Shortyman, alot of laptop issues are from heat and if its fine for a few mins this is because heat builds up.
Have a look at where the vents are on your laptop, are you blocking them when used in your normal location?
you could try a couple of wooden spoons or something to act as spacers under the laptop to allow more airflow around the case.

With laptops its not easy to clean the dust from the cpu heatsink without dissmantling the thing, however if you hold the vacuum nossle over where the air normally blows out and feed a long narrow paintbrush into the intake vent a few times you could shift some stuborn dust that way.

It could be that the thermal grease (or inferior pad in most laptops) is not making good enough contact between cpu and hsk, if so its a more complex job to rectify.

Quote from rockclan :Oh my, NEVER clean hardware with a vacuum-cleaner, always use canned air! Else you can break the hardware.

I don't think he meant to put the laptop on the floor and drive the vacuum cleaner over it lol
but a vacuum cleaner is an essential tool in cleaning PCs, if you dont use one alot of the dust will just float around in the air and get sucked back into the pc.
A cheap can of compressed air has a small % of water in, and if shaken before use or tipped at the wrong angle, can spray droplets of moisture all over your HW
I find the best and cheapest way of cleaning desktop PCs is to use a long bristle paint brush 1/2" is a good size brush in conjunction with a plastic hose connected to the vacuum, as the dust is brushed from componants and fins its sucked into the tube, laptops are more fiddly and need opening up for a proper clean.

If its MRT you need to shift down from neutral to get 1st (like a motobike)

Probably just inverted clutch as Blackbird has said

Check your shifter configs in options/driver, and options/controls

Good Luck

EDIT plug your act labs shifter back in :P

Quote from lolzol :How do you know how many S2 races I've really been in or seen?

Every s1/s2 licence holder has stats saved on lfsworld showing where, when and how many laps you completed in what car, how much fuel you used even your position, in short everything you do online in lfs is tracked.
LFSWorld is a very powerfull and usefull feature.

Please do not tar and feather all us S2 racers with the same brush as you've used for the ones you encountered, join more servers take time to introduce yourself in the chat, ask for help or a setup and see what happens.

Good luck with S2 hopefully its worth it for you in the end.

Quote from BoneCrusher : I DO find it frustrating the devs treath us like we are some low life idiots by not giving some kind of progress report, leaving us in the dark. Sure the devs don't HAVE to do anything, but I'll think they owe that to the community. Because without the community there won't be LFS.

You put words into their mouths that they have not said, if you feel like a "low life idiot" its not because someone is not giving you a progress report.
They don't owe people anything, I don't get the attitude that people think they are entitled to dictate how others work?

Quote from Speed Soro :Scawen made in 3 years (the first 3) much more than the last 4, so I dont agree that "complex things take time", because it doesnt match with the LFS historygram

Its easy to look at released output and say negative things, how do you know the devs havn't got a fleet of new cars and tracks waiting for the physics patch to unvail them? glass half empty?

if comparing Iracing to LFS, one very important point springs to mind,
LFS= single payment (assuming current model, s3 will be £36 (you pay once and can play forever))
Iracing you have to keep on paying and paying and paying
so over time LFS offers far better value for money

I have to admit I tend to read and post less and less on this forum now, due mainly to the falling quality of the majority of posts and the general childish background noise from some of the "regular" forum users over the past couple of years.

Conor you are right with what you say about the apparent lack of respect here in the forum, however there must be more like me who have much respect and understanding for the project, happy to wait for the the next update when Scawen decides its ready, and who choose to remain mainly silent in the forums of late. Maybe just getting on with other things, checking here occasionally for the day the test patch section will spring back into life

I understand the frustration of waiting for a release could get too much for some, and some venting of that, is always to be expected on the web, but if anyone here is reading this and thinking of making a smartass comment like the many hundreds that litter threads like this one, I urge you to reconsider and think a little harder, just maybe a constructive post would be..... well more constructive

Hi Interceptor, unfortunatly I have not solved the problem.

I have tried many things to try to race online, but no luck. so I have now given up, I just dont have the time to keep on at this, and so dont play LFS anymore.

I ended up spending so much time testing and trying things, with little to no luck, I decided to cut my losses, as my time is better spent doing something more constructive, I hope you find a solution and dont give up on it like me, but I wouldn't blame you if you did

I have a hunch () that I may see a solution to this when I renew my network cables, change router and ISP and also change my PC.

PS Good luck.

I don't think its overclocked E7600 @ 3.06 GHz I think thats stock.

Juozas, is your LFS standard or have you updated/installed any 3rd party mods or texture packs?

Have you tried switching AA + AF off ingame and setting in global 3D settings CCC or similar?

If you can install another OS on second HDD even just to use for testing it might be usefull.

Asus Qfan and AI suite have given me probs in the past, I would disable any Cool&Quiet stuff in bios on a gaming PC I like to have full speed CPU all the time.

Here are a couple of other threads with similar/same issues, some have been fixed with new clean LFS installs.

From your video posted, it looks to me like the freeze occurs when you get closer to other cars, and the LOD increases at this point. do you use the "multiplayer speed up" option in LFS/Options/misc ?

watched it again and this defo looks like a GFX driver glitch as the detail goes up so trying an older gfx driver (and older DirectX) could fix your problem.

Are you using the ATI CCC ? is so uninstalling and using something like traytools might be a better option for you.

Does this only happen online? try racing with a full grid of AI drivers(with non default skins) and see if you still get the freezes.

Good luck

The other PC was just to test LFS on (even only demo) just to see if it was/is your network/router/connection that is causing your problem. if LFS runs ok and you don't get the disconnects then it rules out a network prob.

I am no longer using W7 so cannot check for you , but check to see that LFS has permission to send and recieve data through the W7 firewall, windows defender etc.

Other than maybe checking for any driver updates (network adaptor drivers) I dont have any real solutions appart from an OS reinstall.

You could always do a dual boot with XP?

Good luck.

Have you tried running as administrator?

press shift+F8 while ingame connected to a server, what debug messages do you get? (ctrl + S for screenshot)

try a doing a speedtest.net test and pingtest.net and post results.

do you have another PC to try to rule out network probs?

if all else fails backup and try a reinstall of W7 but do the above first.

Good luck

Quote from CSU1 :...I would have thought the percentage of active spamming forum users that are also active on track is very small

...is there some way to get this data???

Imo the forum needs a Customer Services Unit, ie. a dedicated selected group of staff(unpaid obviousley)who's job it is to respond to query's in the beginners forum - All new forum user rights need to be amended(untill "12 quality non-spam posts are made") to only allow posts in the help forum and mod's will direct stray posts here. All standard forum user posting rights need to be removed from posting in the help section untill X time has passed.

...obvious stuff.

Whilst it may be obvious stuff its almost impossible to implement, I mean you could set a min post count, before you could have access to some areas, but thats restrictive and would add a huge amount of extra work checking quality of posts etc.

I don't want to suck the personallity out of the forums, but just wading through the torrent of stupid/useless/pointless posts its just monotonous, and peoples attempts to be amusing like tho one above by peter, not really funny, its of no use, except to increase post count and just adds more spiced ham to the growing mountain here.

I do think most people in the beginners and tech support section of the forums are helped and do get answers and those are the cleanest subforums in terms of spam.

I don't think there is an answer to the way its become, at least not a quick fix, unless you start again from scratch.

even the search button is worth less each day, as more threads fill up with the childish drivel that is becoming more and more present even in the most serious of threads.

I was shocked at some of the posts in the off topic thread, but it seems people really "don't care" what they post and its spilled over into the important part of the official forum.

its sad because this is the first place (except maybe the main lfs site) people come to get and idea of the game and its community.

very bad first impression for some.

it can be so frustrating being able to surf the web fine yet not able to play lfs.

couple of thoughts, is the cable connecting the router to the filter ok unravelled completely? ( I imagine if your anything like me you've removed it and re-inserted a few times), and the patch cable to your PC is that ok? any kinks? or loose plugs ( you might, have a cable tester built into the network drivers on your PC)

Is the router in a hot place or maybe somewhere with electrical interference? (try turning off any low voltage and flourescent lights or anything that could be suspect, I have read that the router should be at least 2m from any sky or sky+box) try moving it if you can to the extent of the cables reach, worth a try.

Have you changed any settings in the router setup page?, have you upgraded the routers firmware? you could try a full factory settings reset and then re input all your login etc.

I take it your router has a built in spi firewall, they normally do, if you want to risk it for a very short time, just to test, try disabling it but only for short test, you understand, at your own risk.

I wouldn't rule out phoning the tech support (watch out for those 0871 numbers often £1 / min +) and explaining the situation they should be able to see the errors/discos on the logs, and can alter your s-n ratio and conn speed from their SW you may find a lower speed will give much better ping stability, as the more data pumped down the line = more noise too (stupid BT copper shite) anyway worth a shot as last resort, however the people trusted to change your settings are normally not the after hours/weekend crew.

might be you have a fault on the line (does look that way I'm 3k+ away from exchange, stable at 3-4kbps conn speed) again tech support should be able to do a proper line test or try BT on 151 (free I think)and ask them to do one.

could even be your new ISPs traffic shaping kicking in, I have read that an LFS packet looks very similar to a P2P packet, not sure about coD or bc2 tho.

Well thats a few thoughts sorry its somewhat of a jumble of Qs

good luck.
