Quote from Jordan2007 :
Open wheeler's i think need a shell going over them for more safety. (Like a classic aeroplane cockpit)

I don't think that'll work. They will need to be easily detatchable for obvious reasons, and they will just fail at the fastening points. And that will be very dangerous if a car rolls over. And think back to the Wurz/Coulthard accident, had there been a structure like that in place it would have just snapped off.

Loads of money has been spent towards making fighter aircraft canopies impact safe with no success.

Wheel tethers are made of Zylon in F1, F2, IRL and presumably other series that use wheel tethers. It is very strong, but has no give. It stretches much less than steel.

What happens when the wheel gets to the end of the tether is that the energy of the wheel is transferred to the mounting points in an extremly short space of time (same as hitting a wall without a crumple zone to spread the load). In some cases, the wheel will reach the end of the tether positioned so that the wheel twists as the tether reaches limit, but I think that still only partially helps, as we see by the number of times tethers fail. F1 cars have 2 tethers iirc, one shorter than the other. The shorter one takes part of the strain if/when it snaps, leaving the main tether to take the rest. I don't know how it works in F2.

To improve tethers, you could build in a deforming section - either a more elastic section or slipping mounting points, such as they use in seatbelts. Or you could have lots of tethers of varying sizes, so they break in turn and each take some of the impact. Feel free to add more ways!

One question I have is why does the amount of detatched wheels differ so much between F2, F1 and Indycars? They all use the same material as I said, so why are indycars so good at keeping wheels attatched compared to F1, and why is F2 so much worse than F1?

Hope that made sense!

Liking the sig btw Jack

Cheers

My laptop is just over a year old, and, well, crap. Actually no, it's okay, just not very good for gaming. You can't compare it to a 'proper' computer. Here's a review btw. I picked it up because it was cheap, even now you'd struggle to find it at the price I paid. I got it for around £150 less than it is on the above site.

Yeah, what MAGGOT said. If you don't want to type all the code, basically type the words you want, then highlight them and click the 'insert link' button (the one with a picture of the earth and a chain). Then paste in the URL.

F2 cars are supposed to have wheel tethers, so I think there's an issue with them if wheels are flying off that easily. (I don't just mean this incedent, check crashes from the races before.) But this was a freak accident, you can't go around saying Henry was killed because tyres fly off too easily. Of course there are things you could do to the track and the cars to prevent this from happening again, but as it was a freak accident, how likely is it that it'll happen again?

R.I.P Henry Surtees. God that's horrible, 18 is way too young. I haven't been following F2, though I've seen him in other series, but I know he was a very good and very likeable driver, and as someone said, he'd achieved the best result of his motorsport career in the race before. It could have happened to anyone, and while I wouldn't wish this on anyone, I do wish it hadn't happened to him.

Such a high class european single-seater death hasn't happened for years (last one Marco Campos in 1995, correct me if I'm wrong), and a lot of that is down to safety advances. It is quite hard to die in anything other than a freak accident these days, and that is what happened here. I've seen Henry walking around the paddock when he was in Formula Renault, but unfortunately didn't get to talk to him. Now I never will, nor will I get to see him race again.

Again, R.I.P Henry Surtees, and my most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, including of course John. Just unfair. And 5tag is so right about the irony.

3rd baby!

But this means I can't take part in the next drag race, and when the next race of any sort comes along I'll be thrashed by maxed out class 1 and 2 cars. Harrumph.

This needs to be pretty big for it to work, and tbh I don't think the conditions are right just now. And if people need to pay, there will be even less competitors. It sounds like quite a good idea, I'll probably try to race if it looks like it wil succeed, but I don't think it will in the near future.

Also, just the words 'Formula One' will be enough to put off a good chunk of people!

Isn't that part of the attraction? These days, almost all the time you need rain for an exciting race! And the scenery was good too.

This is the first time since 1985 that the German Grand Prix has taken place at the Nürburgring. (Instead of the European Grand Prix etc).

Quote from Insert random copypasta'd description :The Nürburgring, simply known as "The Ring" by enthusiasts, is a motorsport race track in Nürburg, Germany. It was built in the 1920s around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel, which is about 70 kilometres (43 mi) south of Cologne, and 120 kilometres (75 mi) northwest of Frankfurt. Nicknamed The Green Hell by Jackie Stewart, it is widely considered the toughest, most dangerous and most demanding purpose-built race track in the world.

Originally, the track featured four track configurations: the 28.265 kilometres (17.563 miles) long Gesamtstrecke ("Whole Course"), which in turn consisted of the 22.810 km (14.173 mi) Nordschleife ("Northern Loop"), and the 7.747 km (4.814 mi) Südschleife ("Southern Loop"). There also was a 2.281 km (1.417 mi) warm-up loop called Zielschleife ("Finish Loop") or better known as Betonschleife, around the pit area. Between 1982 and 1983 the start-finish area was demolished to create a new GP-Strecke, and this is currently used for all major and international racing events. However, the Nordschleife is still in use.

I am told by an official German that 'Großer Preis Santander von Deutschland' is grammatically incorrect, instead it should be 'Großer Santander Preis von Deutschland'. I don't know why, could anyone elaborate? Is it like calling the British GP 'British Santander Grand Prix' or something?
