Thanks, I haven't really kept track of the times, only while I'm actually hotlapping, but I'll take note of my best times from now on, so I know where I stand.
Need lap times, plz read

I'm a keyboarder, veteran but not all that great. I was hoping someone could give me some good lap times to shoot for.
Track: Blackwood regular
Cars: FXO, XRT, FXR, FZR

Thanks a lot, I tried looking around but I can't find a good reference other than world records, which does no justice my times aren't even close. If someone could possibly post like, a range, like hypthetically, (1:10 to 1:14 would be good) Something like that, I appreciate it. I've been working really hard on setups and I think I've got awesome setups for the FXO, XRT and FXR for BP.

The reason I choose blackwood is because I already went through the trouble of working on setups, and although it's not the most dramatic track, it's fun, and I'd like to master it, then move on. My next challenge will be Fern Bay Gold rev, and maybe normal too, love that track, actually I think my setups might work on that track, times for that track would kick a$$ too. Any help at all, or a link to a page I missed would be much appreciated. Although I'm on keyboard, I'm pretty quick, I can't quite compete with ppl who have uber setups, but I think I'm as quick as I'll ever get on KB. Again, thanks for any input.

Quote from The Moose :A 6800GS is easily capable of running 4*s AA with 16*AF with virtually no FPS loss at all.

I think it's impossible to put that much strain on a GPU and not get any loss of FPS, the term virtually helps, but, nah, you must be running games in extremely low resolutions, making your CPU your bottleneck.

If he uses it his way then it's perfectly fine, IMO. There are many ways to enjoy LFS.

+1

However, overall I think it should be considered a simulation. Although people may do with it what they please, of course.

It is a simulator. Sure, for some it's a game, regardless it's a simulator.

You made a good buy, the 8600GT 512MB GDDR3 Overclocked is superior to the 7900. The unified architecture alone makes it a better card, plus is uses half the power.

I think the perfect video would be cockpit view of the FZ5 around one of a long track with good twisties. Although I love the video's posted so far, just not what I'm looking for. They honestly don't show the realism of LFS, most of what's shown can be done in arcade racers. We can tell the difference, but hardly anyone unfamiliar with LFS can.

I'll check out the last two, see if they're good enough, the first does no justice. Thanks man!

Edit: The second is perfect, and I plan to use it. But I'd really really like a video of someone rippin it from the cockpit view, I think that shows the realism more than anything. Because even need for speed video's can be made to look as good as the Saiko D video.

I love LFS, and I'm constantly trying to tell people how realistic it is, but people just blow it off, as if I'm just a huge fan of the "game"(yeah they don't even consider it a sim, well... because they're unfamiliar with it).

Anyways, I'd very much appreciate if someone could create a video showing off how realistic it is. If there's a video out there that does so, throw me a link But most video's don't make the sim look realistic, they just don't give justice to how realistic the sim is. Don't get me wrong, there are some badass video's around here for LFS, but they're not quite what I'm looking for.

I can't think of how it could be done, certainly not online because the lagging gives it a bad taste right away, even tho it doesn't actually matter, it will have a negative effect on those unfamiliar with the sim.

I figure single player, maybe a lap or two, cockpit view, with really nice power slides, not drifting, but power sliding enough to show off the physics. If I could get ahold of a video like this, I can get post it and have thousands of views very easily. I belong to many boards, clans for FPS games, etc etc.

Anyone up to the challenge? I'd do it myself, but first I've never made a video, second I dunno if I have the power to do so (peep the sig), third, it might be better that someone with skills making videos does it. The better the video, the better the impression it will give.

Perhaps a great driver whipping the FZ5 around blackwood or Fern Bay Gold Reversed.

P.S. This is something I think would draw great attention to the sim, and make believers of non-believers.

I think I've gotten as fast as I'll ever get on keyboard, I'm fairly certain. And I know for a fact I can go faster, I know what holds me back, it's all in the input. I guess I have some room for improvement, but I don't think I'll take that, next big step, in this sim until I get a wheel setup. Maybe after I grab a new video card I'll consider it, by then I'll have a wall lenth desk, I'll think of something, or get advise on the board here. Because the computer is used primarily for gaming, but mostly FPS games(quake wars/oblivion/COD etc etc), so I need plenty of space for my mouse and keyboard. Maybe they make a desk with a portion that can swivel, because I assume a wheel would need to be fixed, as in, screwed into place well so not to move. This would be impossible for me.

Quote from Jakg :The slow bandwidth of the 8600GT makes it pretty useless full stop.

I'd never recommned one when things like the 7900GS are faster and cheaper...

I wanted an 8 series card because of it's unified architecture, and I absolutely hated the 7800GSOC card I owned previous to my 8600GT. It was three times the size, made three times the heat and hogged way too much power, and didn't perform as well as the 8600GTOC, and certainly not with my present OC. Anyways I think I remember the 7900GS being 17.8% faster than the 8600GT in 3dMark, so I figure my OC'd version should be nearly equal. Jeez I really ramble on don't I, I'm really really bored and wide awake.

I would suggest any overclocked version of the 8600 series over any 7 series(except the uber 7 series models if they can be had at a good price)

But, after playing Bioshock on my 7800GSOC like, 15 times thru the demo, then checking it out when I got the 8 series, I couldn't believe how much better it looked. Because it only uses "some" DX10 effects and not all out DX10, the mid range 8600 series can handle it, ran it perfectly on highest settings. The 7800GSOC struggle very badly at my monitors native resolution.

For LFS, whichever is cheaper lol, won't make any difference I bet.

/me receives award for longest and most pointless post/rant evar:sleep2:

EDIT: Right before I got the BFG 7800GSOC, I had a 7600GT, no OC out of the box at all, for the money, it was the most impressive card I've ever bought. I took one hell of a beating, the OC I got out of it was down right mean, and it ate it up and lasted, still runs to this day in my cousins machine. Until the release of the 9600GT, it was IMO the best bang4buck card period, I can't even imagine what the superclocked was like.

Quote from scoobyrbac :I say that the 8600 is a good choice.. i bought the OC'ed version about 6 months ago and its the best one I'v ever had but I do suggest upgrading your power supply...you might be playing a game and your graphics card might pull more power and short out your other pc components.

Ahh, you got the 256MB version, is it GDDR2 or GDDR3, HUGE difference in performance. For the 8600GT's I can't recommend anything less than the 512 version with the GDDR3, it needs it with only 32 unified shaders. The bandwidth of the ddr2 memory can really hurt in newer games, but for LFS, I doubt it even matters, be that the case, shoudln't be an issue.

My cousin is running a nearly identical system as mine, same overclocked 8600GT, 6400+, and a 300W PSU. I wouldn't recommend it, but it works. I guess it depends on the quality of each one too, not just rated specs. I'd recommend a good PSU when you get the chance, it's important, and then you'll be future proof for years! If it all works fine for now though, I wouldn't sweat it, the 8600GT runs off the PCI-E slot's power alone, so you may actually get away with the 300W you have, lets just hope it's a reasonable brand.

My bad I completely forgot the GT was rear engine, damn, if it weren't, well, it woudln't be the car it is, and I wouldn't recommend it. I guess the Vette would be good, they're great on the track, just never bother owning one, they're terrible otherwise, but that has no effect on the game itself. All in all, I think a top of the line Saleen Mustang would do just fine, along with the Z06. Vipers, ehh, just too sloppy for me, I only got to drive one once, it was a mid 90's RT/10, it had like 25k miles on it, and it fealt like it was falling apart. It was very unforgiving, it fealt like a fantastic engine, with the rest of the car thrown together from junk yard parts. I dunno, hard to explain, just my opinion tho. I feel a Z06 or Saleen would be far superior.

But if there's anyway to get a Ford GT into this sim, wooooh, I would be going nuts. The power, the balance, just, perfection. American power with european suspension, brakes, and well, everything else lol.

Quote from Hyperactive :Imho, if we really would get a more powerful FZ5 I'd like to see it rear wheel drive as well. Somewhere between 500 and 600 is good for me

It would also need a mid-engine competitor, like a Ferrari F40 AND McLaren F1 AND Maserati MC12. And a front engine competitor like Corvette Z06 AND Dodge Viper GTS.

Naturally a smaller supercar class would be nice with cars like Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, TVR Sagaris, Ferrari F430, BMW M3 and ...

As for rotary (wankel) engine, maybe one for a prototype...

Here's a good list: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=254973#post254973

While I agree with your mid engine choices, I don't quite agree with the front engine one's. The Z06 perhaps, definitely no vipers, they're so terrrible, a Ford GT would be much better.

Also I would like to see a R32 thrown into the mid range mix. Basically the XFR with AWD, 6spd re-geared, a bit heavier and bigger, riding on 18-19" F/R.

In the end, I'll be happy with one new car to each class(while not losing any present cars, I love them all), and one new class all together, which would make for what, 6 new cars. I think this would please everyone. Although all I want to really really see is an american style rwd muscle car, and an awd 200-250hp hatch.

Quote from Lost Moose :Thanks for helping everybody.
I bough the NVIDIA 8600 GT and it works with 300watts.
The problem was a broken graphics card I assume. I didn't have to disable anything it just worked the first time I tried.

Good for you, great choice. I'm running a 8600GT myself, with a 400w PSU, no problems. What brand, did you grab an overclocked one? If not you'll have lots of headroom to OC it, unless you have a super quiet fanless version. I'm running 600 core, 800 memory.

Quote from AdanteFornax :I'm sorry. I really don't get the point you're trying to make

Do you drive a car in real life with buttons ?

Then don't try to justify using a driving sim with keyboard or mouse !!!!!

peace out

When I play I don't pretent I'm racing in real life. I enjoy it as a simulator, and may eventually get a wheel, simple as that. As far as real racing, I do as much as possible, we get several events at Pocono and Nazareth, ie the Audi Driving Experience, I'm a first timer for that this year. I also drag race, all over the place. I can't say for sure I understand exactly what point it was you didn't understand.

Quote from slen :Back in the Quake days.... the more FPS you had the further you could jump.

Very true, but I actually think the issue was people were able to jump higher, although, if they could jump higher, then they could likely jump further as well so, it was an issue, although I'm not sure if the bug made it's way into W:ET. I think with the Doom3 engine they finally got rid of the bug, capping the FPS at 60, although it actually runs at closer to 63 with a very high end machine. I believe this bug no longer exists in Quake4(Capped same as Doom 3, @ 60FPS) and ET:QW, where it's capped at 30fps out of the box, and although it can be unlocked, server side prevents any advantage. It seems no matter how far you set your FPS (mine is locked at 90) it makes no difference, likely because the servers run at 30fps/30hz.

Quote from lei1634 :DHRammstein- that was my mustang..I sold it. Im in the process of saving for my 08GT500..but My friends dad has 5! count it 5 shelby mustangs in his garage. Including Eleanor. and my other friend has a 800hp 04 Cobra..there is a few others around but they dont compare to these..Im still a part of the mustang club of America..i just have to wait till i can get a used one for a decent price.

Nice car, yeah, I'm selling mine too. But for good reason, I'm picking up a '04 Cobra this summer, takin my time, wanna get one real mint. My only plans are a kenne bell whipple, not sure what size, probably a 600rwhp conservative setup and tune, and a few other minor things. They're a real blast, especially with a really good suspension and brakes, which will be one of the first to get done. I love straight line power, but I want a mustang that can take the corners and brake, I guess I'm more of a corner burner than a typical mustang owner. Although, I love drag racing, spend a lot of time at my local tracks. Right now I'm driving my VR6, but I don't drag race it, it's setup for corner burning, would be a dog at a drag strip, lucky high 13's.

Wow I can't believe the cars you listed! 5 of them, including Eleanor, that's just, heh, incredible! Is he a collector? Wow, he could have had 2 of them, and a Ford GT!!!

Yeah I love the '03/'04 Cobra's sooo much, everything about the car, the supercharger whine, the ability to make insane power with a few modds and a nice tune! Totally badass cars. I kind of prefer the model I'm looking for over the Shelby's, but only because of how heavy they are. My buddie's father just bought one six months ago, he let me take it for a spin, only a few miles, but how excited, switched off the traction control, had it sideways through third! It seriously fealt like 0-60 in around 4.5. The reg GT Limited I'm selling could bang out about a 5.1 0-60, and that car fealt much quicker. My only complains were the weight, and the live axle. The terminators are IRS, and factory whipple, "I'm sold!!!!!"

Have you had the chance to whip around the Eleanor treat?? What an absolutley sick car, in every way.

Apologies for the temporary hijack, if I did.

Lei1634, hit me back, if not on here, PM. It would be dope if you're local, we have a nice club down here, very much open to muscle, imports of all kinds, and everyone's respectful, and know their place, for example, we don't have kids with stock honda's talkin shit on Cobra's

Actually I like the keyboard, especially now that I've got it working for me. But the main reason certainly isn't money, if it was something I'd really like, I'd spend the cash. I may get one one day, but until I get a new place, and have the room for a bigger, better desk, there's just no way. Plus I spend most of my time playing fps's, especially quake wars. They're my favorite gaming. But I do love LFS, and simulators in general, like Microsoft Flight Simulator, been running it for over ten years. Anyways, down the road, I think I may get one, we'll just have to wait and see. Right now I'm using only the keyboard, no mouse, can't stand the mouse, and after finding the option for "Button Control Rate", I'm running great. It would be nice if I could borrow a nice wheel for a month or so just to see if I'd like it, it would help me to make a decision. But, I don't know anyone personally who plays LFS, and believe me, I'm all over people about it. Every gaming forum I use, I make a post every once in a while, till this day, haven't got one person to even peep the demo...with the exception of two people, but they didn't last an hour, they absolutely hated it, weren't PC gamers in the first place, and can't see the difference between a Sim and a game like Need4Speed. Typical gamers just aren't into simulators I guess, maybe I'm not posting in the right places, oh well. We got plenty of good people around here. Maybe I could pick up a used wheel for cheap around here, hmm, I'll look into that, it's just frustrating my desk is no good for a wheel, and I have very little room because for now I have to keep my system in my room, I need an extra computer room, but I should have a place soon, just need to sell my property, or wait for my CD to mature, eh, we'll see. I'd really like to be able to have the control a wheel can provide, especially with spin recovery, extremely difficult using keyboard to turn. Maybe I could try setting up the quick steer buttons for that purpose. Uhg, what a long rant, my bad heh. Overly tired and over stimulated from tons of hotlapping, I got a totally badass Grippy setup for the XRT, and I can't get enough.

Without putting a proven good card in your system, there's no way to know. But I'd be suspicious of the wire that was missing, if there's not at least two, it was no good regardless. Although, I'm not sure what would happen if there was no power to the fan.

Honestly, that's not a very good performing card, and you've got enough power to run a 8500/8600, the latter being a huge step from the 8400. If they're too expensive I recommend a X1950 Radeon or a Geforce 7600GT. The DirectX 10 support of the 8400 is not worth considering because the card doesn't have the power necesary to run a DX10 game.
