Fake overtaking...

I still maintain that there isn't such a thing as "real" overtaking. Ongoing "battles" between two consistent drivers are rare to nonexistent. Once the faster guy gets in front of the slower guy (the equilibrium state of things, because the faster guy should win right?) there's no way for the slower guy to catch up short of a gimmick like push to pass, or an off-track event like pitting or an accident.

Let me illustrate what needs to take place for genuine overtaking:

- Hamilton: leads Kimi and is lapping .5 faster.
- Kimi: magically cuts 1.0 off his time and passes Hamilton.
- Hamilton: magically cuts 1.0 off his time to regain position.
- Kimi: magically cuts 1.0 off his time again to pass Hamilton.
- Kimi: makes a mistake and slows 1.0 allowing Hamilton to pass.
- and on it goes for 30+ laps

That doesn't happen. If Hamilton is .5 a lap faster, it usually stays that way. You won't get those fluctuations in relative speed between drivers to allow passing.

That was great! With the announcer's focus on Hamilton I'm guessing that the announcing wasn't done in 1996.

Quote from BlueFlame :Reduce the downforce, reduce the grip. But good racing shouldn't need to be manufacturered. It should just happen.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It doesn't exist. It's just a dream.

Ever watch that kart race with all the F1 drivers in equal karts? What happened? Well the fastest guy lead. Then the second fastest guy was in second. Then the third fastest guy was third... and so on. A parade to the end.

I'm glad that I'm not addicted to sim-racing anymore because I'm pretty disappointed at the state of everything at the moment. Yes, it's as good as it has ever been, but I was hoping there would be more progress overall.

Three years ago it was LFS, and LFS alone. It set the bar and there was no doubt about it. Now... now we have iRacing and NKP and GT5 (yes that would be Gran Turismo 5!!!) exposing all sorts of weaknesses about eachother. Each are really good at something, but none good at everything.

They've all ruined it for me:
- LFS has ruined everything else when it comes to multiplayerability and community.
- iRacing has ruined everything else when it comes to environment accuracy.
- NKP has ruined everything else when it comes to feel.
- GT5 has/will ruin everyhing else when it comes to the pure sexyness of beautifully rendered real cars.

Since I'll never be happy playing any one game, I'll take the coward's way out and just play none of them.

Quote from mrodgers :Whoa! Wait a minute! CTRA is no longer around? I had no idea. When did that happen?

That blows.

Those servers really did a good job of gathering up the racers on a consistent basis.

I was just about to post about the same thing.

I was beginning to think the problem was on my end. Glad that's not the case. But yes, even LFS is showing up as harmful. Well everything is.

Depends on the organizers and on the track.

The group I go to has a continuous block of 3-4 hrs track time. Run as much as you want. On a cool 13*C day, I had the car on track continuously for more than an hour, with cool down laps every 15 minutes or so. Then it was time to fill up the gas tank.

In addition to being fun and addictive and all that, you might never look at sims in the same way again.

Quote from mclarenmatt :Ok im probably gonna get flamed for saying this but i gotta say the FFB in LFS is....well crap tbh

iRacing and netKar Pro have much better FFB imo, you can feel what the car is doing alot more.

Even rFactor with the Realfeel plugin setup correctly is right on LFS tail
...
This lack of "feel" is the reason why i haven't fired up LFS in a long time!

:bananadea

There you go.

Lemme explain why. I think you're confusing LFS's lack of "FF Friction" as being uncommunicative. The steering is too light on all the cars in LFS, and it feels less really dull that way.

In terms of communicating what the car is doing, particularly feeling oversteer start to build up through a corner and then finally breaking loose and counter steering, I think LFS does it a bit better than NKP and way way way better than iRacing.

LFS needs something like FF Friction to give more effort to the steering.

Quote from S14 DRIFT : I'd dream of buying the arcade machine and
sticking it my garage. Gah, those were the days!!

eBay has the answer for about $5000... but that's just silly. http://cgi.ebay.com/FERRARI-F3 ... IMSfp=TL090109111010r1681

Quote from Ian.H :Nope.. the Hard Drivin' arcade machine had ~900 degrees (can't remember exactly how many, but the wheel turned a lot) and had both clutch and H-shift box. Even had a key you had to turn to start the engine! Out way before Ridge Racer

I vaguely remember having played that one at a crummy amusement park! Very vaguely.

It's scary that I recognize that DOS stuff from the early 90's. My sim history goes way back as well, and I even have a Porsche 928 battery powered clicker thing like that Tomy Racing Turbo toy.

Let me just say a few words about GranTurismo One. It rocked my world. It turned it upside down and it blew me away. Although I hate what GranTurismo represents today, I have to admit that I was once one of those kids with GT1. Y'know... thought they knew everything there was to know about cars, and had the video game to back it up?

I even remember trying to drift with an AE86 and wondered why I couldn't. Well because the physics were fcking messed up! I didn't know better back then. They lied to me! They told me I had a simulator! Screw you polyPhoney! Damn it they got me again with GT3. Then they got me again with GT4.

I'm smarter now. I have a driver's license now I have track experience now. They won't get me again. GT5, LFS, NKP, and especially iRacing, I raise my eyebrow at you with skepticism

So what hasn't been mentioned yet...

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE Racer! Was this the first time we saw a 900-ish degree wheel with clutch and H-shifter?

And was it not until Ferrari F355 Challenge that we saw 3 pedals again?

Quote from Intrepid :no not at all. Just showing why motorsport is so unique. Well 4 wheeled circuit racing. You can take a so called 'top level' driver, stick him in with some club drivers and they

Wait wait wait wait wait.

This is the LFS forum so lets talk sim racing for a bit. Isn't it the case the fast alien drivers are always the fast alien drivers no matter the sim/track/car combo? In terms of casting a net, sim racing casts a much wider one than real motorsport. Now this is assuming sims are sophisticated enough to proxy for the real thing.

Isn't there a video around of some alien sim guy (pause for google), okay so it's David Greco driving a real F3 car and getting close to a good time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoDVeoXq99A

Keep in mind also that not matter how realistic their physics engine, tire model etc etc, they'll never be able to simulate a car like the GTR.

Why?

Because so much of the GTR's handling depends on the computer controlled AWD system. Now, do you really think Nissan's going to let polyPhoney have their precious Porsche killing algorithms. Of course not.

That's the problem with trying to simulate real life. You have to actually simulate it.

That is pretty cool indeed.

So does anyone else realize that these tilting systems are limited to a maximum of 1 G?

I think the ULTIMATE way to do motion sim is to use a robotic arm roller coaster system like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoA-m5iHG9s You can definitely pull more than 1 G with that thing. Perhaps even up to oh say... 4.5g like in an F1 car.

Not what I wanted to hear since the PS3 is still stupidly expensive.

Oh well, I'll always have Enthusia.

The thought of a console game surpassing a computer sim makes my skin crawl. That's my elitism talking. The plebes should get the inferior stuff.

Quote from Ikaponthus :I really get the impression that a lot of the people in this thread don't even have their driver's licence yet. Maybe I'm too old for this. I probably should just dish out for iRacing and go hang with the "hardcore" gang.

What are you getting upset about anyway? Are they wrong for criticizing GT5 letting a F1 car get air like that?

BTW, can the F1 in LFS jump with reasonable downforce settings? Wouldn't want to be a hypocrite.

The DVR and Youtube compression makes it look almost real.

Racing against a professional driver, and a currently famous one at that, is pretty darn cool.

Almost worth paying a hiPrice for. I had to say it.

Quote :The King's Highway 401 (also known as the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway) is a highway that extends across Southern Ontario, Canada. It is the longest 400-Series Highway in Ontario, and one of the widest and busiest highways in the world.[4][5] In fact, the highway has the distinction of being North America's busiest freeway.

That's light traffic. During rush hour all 20 lanes of this stretch of the 401 is in complete grid lock. Lots of Ontarians here, you guys know what I'm talking about. Fun stuff.
