guys iRacing isn't going anywhere...if it was, it'd be gone already.

I think you can take your monetary concerns and throw them out the window.

John Henry is pretty well off...and he wants it to happen. He only invested $690 million into the redsocks in 2002...

I really doubt it would have gotten to this point if they were just going to shut down. They aren't stupid...no one was expecting any more than what they have. The feeling I get is that they're very happy with the way things are going, and its getting better all the time. They have yet to even launch their full advertising campaign yet...I've seen minimal press stories, and the occasional magazine ad.

About all these thread ruining arguments, I really don't care to get into debates about it. To all the angry people who can't afford it...bummer. Don't hate iracing because you don't have the extra money.

If you hate the subscription deal, but like the service and the sim itself...then either don't race or just deal with it and subscribe...because its not changing, and no amount of bitching/slamming/defacing will.

iRacing is no different than an MMO. World of warcraft. $15 a month, now has 2 expansion packs. $40 per game or more + 150 a year with the reduced price for longer subscriptions. gee....$300 for the first year for a game...imagine that.

Quote from NightShift :It would be not a bad idea if they were going to offer a different 'starter pack' for Europeans. The Legends might be a fun car but certainly it doesn't light up my fire...

the user base isn't nearly big enough to split it up so heavily yet.

If the track they're gonna scan is Spa then its not a very good secret lol.

Quote from The Moose :They are introducing what is virtually pick up racing for 24 hours every Saturday. Races every 30 mins. Road racing one week, Ovals the next. About time too.

and from what it sounds like they're going to experiment with combos that haven't been done before...should be neat

Quote from Gnomie :I see this attitude very often.. seriously, what's up with everyone being so super-cautious and nervous about racing?? I'm going to try a one-month subscription after Christmas, and when I do my focus will be entirely on having fun. Close racing and good fighting is all that I'll be looking for. What's the point of racing if you're not having fun, and just worrying about stats?? It just seems like a completely wrong attitude if you ask me.

(Yes, I understand how iRatinga and SR works!)

Its because iracing has the ability to knock the wind out of your sails without warning. Win the last 4 races, then out of nowhere run in the premier field and run around in last place for the whole race.

Also there are people waiting for the race where the strength of field will be high enough that they will earn lots of points for their first race, and then not race again the whole week.

I personally don't follow championship points. I do like to get my lap times down as low as possible and see how I compare. I'm normally around like top 10 in division two when I don't suck. All the futzing around in the solstice, the mazda, the radical and late model really hurt me though.

Watkins is an awesome announcement..I wonder if we really won't see another car until the end of the season though :| I hope they release the DP sooner as I need a different driving experience to make it new again.

Quote from thisnameistaken :So it's not just alienating racers, but it's also commercially unsustainable. Way to go, hiPricing!

How many people do you know with more than a couple of hours free in the evenings who can spare the subscription fees? Most of us find a few hours a week at best for playing computer games. If you like to spend that time racing, iRacing is poor value.

For christ sake it went public what, 3 months ago? Investments have turn around periods. When you start up any business you're in debt to an investor for years...or forever until they foreclose on you...which seems more common these days sadly.

They have the owner of the red socks and part owner of Rousch Fenway racing backing them thoroughly...its his project, I doubt its going anywhere (unless baseball does).

All I'm trying to say (multiple times now) is that just because the system doesn't work for you in some way or another doesn't make it bad, or worthy of being shit on.

Saving 3 trips to starbucks will get you one month of iracing btw, its not all that expensive...people compare it to real racing and track days and stuff. How about compare it to other comfort items in our lives that we don't really need.

LOL that's hilarious...

It is the furthest thing from elitist or exclusive or anything. It is true if you race online just to wreck you're in the wrong place...but it doesn't cost a lot because of that.

Regardless of the 20 million they have sunk with $0 coming in, do you realize how much money it takes to keep the doors open at a company like that? The salaries and server costs alone probably put them break even. Its no where near the size yet it needs to be to sustain itself, even at these prices. Don't go making stuff up please...

Also, I could race every hour on the hour for 24 hours straight if I wanted to. Then there's testing, qualifying, time trials...anything in between.

I've lost my mojo

it happens every new season.

Iracing depression

I can't figure out what to race so I spend minimal time with everything (if I race at all) and I suck when I do.

I've 7 tenths off my PB at summit point from last season and I'm just not finding the time back.

Oh well, off to race and hopefully snap me out of it a bit.

I give up...I'm 2nd and am following right behind the leader. He's all over the place...I could have pressed the issue many times, but no I was staying behind him like someone who didn't want to crash would

2nd lap last corner he loops it right in front of me yayyyyyyy

time for a break from iracing...maybe I'll come back strong in the 2nd half of the season like I did last time. For now, screw this I'm not having fun anymore.

I think this track and car combo really brings out the non-realism in sim racing...

It really accentuates the no fear aspect of it all lol. That lap that Ben Cornett posted was amazing, but honestly...would someone be able to pull that off in real life lap after lap?

Mashing the brake for a tenth of a second and pitching it into turn 1.

Turning in everywhere at full throttle with no fear of something not working for you mid corner and pushing into the wall

Catching some massive sideways air on the top of the uphill

Bottoming out in the downhill and practically having a minor snap spin before it regains grip and continues through the corner.

Its so beyond being on the edge...and yet its where all the fastest people will be at the end of the week still looking for ways to push it farther.

http://blip.tv/file/1476080/

I think my problem is that I'm half way between that style of driving the mazda, and the conserved style...and it needs to be one or the other. (if anyone is still interested in me :P)

I almost posted this on the iracing forum, but it would be very OT for a constructive thread and I didn't feel like making a new one.

I honestly hate the mazda. I've given it so many fair chances that I just don't want to drive it anymore.

I guess I'll do a few time trial sessions this season and gratefully accept my promotion...and hopefully the daytona prototype is going to be everything I want it to be.

If not, heres hoping we get a real car soon. I love open wheel cars (I thought) but pounding around the track in a full sized car is a really different experience.

I also hope the lotus will drive nothing like the mazda...

I'm not convinced I'm driving the same car I see in the videos tbh.

I get zero feedback from the wheel...and when I do countersteer I just shoot off the other direction into the wall. I turn in and I spin out, I counter steer and I impale the wall.

I can slide the skippy and the solstice and the radical...and the late model for days. The late model was a drift car in its second life I think...it just hangs the rear out as long as you want. The mazda...it bites your head off.

(I figured we needed a bit more on topic discussion then the same old argument)

Quote from Intrepid :I couldn't give s sh1t about iRating or SR. That's all bollox imo. The whole system is SO unrealistic, and arcade like. I don't even know what my ratings are! It's so gimmicky! I go wide a tad trying to push and some stupid rubbish comes up about off track incident WTF? I am not breaking the rules in reality! I should be punished by a lack of speed doing this, or if I clearly have breached the rule book. Instead it's neither!

With a proper league system, and proper officials it would be MUCH better. Instead you get people cutting the corkscrew and slamming on the brakes coz of the slowdown command!

If you can be bothered to get through the boredom of rookie races than obviously the standard will rise, but I dont have the patience, nor money to do this. It has made me appreciate the work that private leagues do like the GPC, OWRL etc... SO MUCH more because if LFS had the same system as iRacing...

There's so much right about iRacing but it's let down by it's system. I would prefer proper leagues, with proper points, and proper officiating!

You've not been around it long enough to see its worth, or you maybe never will, but the system works and its not going anywhere.

I'm not trying to argue. I'm just saying if you do give it the time it will come back to reward you in spades.

Quote from hrtburnout :I *cough* bought an early version, somewhere on the wide interwebs. It's a fun game, but far too serious. Just one wheel on the grass gave me a penalty already.

Most cars disappoint me too: only the Solstice, Radical and Skip Barber were good fun to drive, and great fun finding their limits. The tracks are great though, except for the fact that most of them are ovals

I was bored of it after messing around for a few hours.

you can't even begin to give it a real review by torrenting it and playing off line

Quote from Hyperactive :I don't think I'll protest it. The guy actually followed behind me for the rest of the race even if I was driving a very damaged car. He also said sorry after the race and seemed to mean it so... and I didn't even lose positions, only sr took some hit but that's it. Now when I'm watching that vid I'm kinda almost laughing, the car just jumps from nowhere right in front of me in true surprising fashion

lol yeah I've never protested anyone before either.

From the video it looked pretty deliberate lol

Quote from Hyperactive :Imho, racing simply lacks in telling the drivers what's ok and what's not, sometimes even a simple rejoining the track is just plain dangerous:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aiOiLpno170&fmt=18
(And that happened twice in the race)

It's all good intentions but some just have no idea what's the racing etiquette is...

protest that...he came into the middle of the track and stopped. Even if he was just going back on track he didn't check f3 first to make sure it was clear.

Quote from Jertje :I don't know really... I don't think that running fast is hard in the Rookie Legends. I find that those races are more based on experience; things like saving the tyres, running higher lines without losing (much) speed and good starts take some time to learn, and I suck at all of those. The actual driving really doesn't take that much skill though. Sure, getting from 16.1 to 16.0 at Lanier requires a ton of practice and dicking around, but it's not as unreachable as the extreme times on road-courses.

Maybe it's very different in the more difficult cars, but I don't think I'll ever spend the cash on those. I can always just keep doing rookie legends to inflate my iRating as I get better, for a solid combined rating of 6000+ or whatever

I agree. I didn't have a clue what I was doing when I hopped in the legend races on week 13 to raise my SR. I was still winning races.

Late model I was pretty far off the pace because I wasn't driving into the corners...I was lifting before I turned in (lol road course). Once I saw a vid that showed the gas pedals...I qualified pole and won the race. I raced some more with good results...and then got thrown in the alien field and got dead last...very disheartening.

Quote from Jertje :Apparantly, everyone stays in formation until the green flag, and then you exceed the pace-speed (which is 60-80kph or whatever, I don't know )
In my experience however, some people stay way the hell back and floor the crap out of it before green to jump 3-4 places instantly. I never realised that might be illigal, but I always went when the leader went in my previous races.

you can't pass on the inside before the start/finish line

they'll get in trouble soon enough

I raced lanier last night in the late model for the first time. I was pole of course...because I'm right in the middle. I'm either last place in the insane bracket, or I'm first in the second race that fills up. Anyways, about 12-15 laps in I'm fully on the inside of last place going into the corner...like front wheel at front wheel, and he comes down from the highest lane and plows into the side of me. I still slid my way home in 4th, but I almost crashed like 5 times. I was very comfy in first until that happened...

The sporting code like...does not apply to oval racing apparently. Road racing sessions are mostly polite, good natured, rule abiding fun. Ovals...watch out.

Quote :I am still in belief that laser scannng is nothing more than a red herring also. BUT it does make perfect business sense for iRacing to have laser scanning and real tracks. It's fantastic for marketing, and IS what people in general want. On tracks my annoyance is a personal one, but the not demoing cars thing should be changed! It just amkes money sense!

Well I believe the tracks bring a lot to the sim. If you haven't yet, take a look at a vid of the trucks goin around daytona. I haven't seen that intense of bumps in any sim yet.

In my short time in the legend cars I found a bump coming out of one of the turns at South Boston that when I could manage to hit it helped turn the car on exit.

There are bumps all over the place on the road course tracks that make things more lively and interesting, and aren't made up.

What is it a red herring for though, you didn't mention. What are the laser scanned tracks drawing the attention away from?

I agree, they really should offer demos of the cars.

rough day, lost .1 in the skippy lol. Found out that my setup understeers like a mofo for the first 6 laps before I can start cranking out low 48's. With less gas in it during qual I could do that from lap 1.

thanks

I've calmed down a bit now lol, that helped a lot surprisingly. I came back and read it later and had a good laugh. (still really hoping they make good on the promotion..it'll suck to be behind a whole 12 weeks).

Anyways, between working (procrastinating) on my speech for tomorrow, I did a lot of sessions in the legend car and got my SR up to 4.0. I just had my first race in the late models and I'm pretty glad I got em!

I qualified first with a 22.45, and was completely lost on the start. This is like my 10th oval race ever, if that. I am used to the legend tracks where the green flag is thrown really quickly...it was a longgggggg ways down there.

Second place got a jump and I spent 30 laps trying to figure out how to pass someone on this tiny track in the fattest car I've driven yet lol. I finally figured it out and got a run underneath him and we went like 5 or 6 turns side by side until he fell back in behind me. I cruised to the end after that. It was good fun overall though. I'll definitely keep going with it!

This week I'm still planning on racing the skippy at infineon, and next week I'm gonna get ready for the mazda at silverstone...I hope I learn to love the mazda here pretty quickly.

I'm gonna have to wait to run the radical when it gets to a track I own..I think that'll be silverstone as well. Doesn't matter much since I need to get my license up to 4.0 from 3.55..shouldn't take too long hopefully.

I wish the iracing forums allowed one post per week/month or whatever to fly past the rules in the sporting code...

It takes a long time to write a post full of satisfying words and phrases, and then go back and edit them out.

The cock suckers over there that aren't affected at all by the 13th week promotion thing are really starting to get on my nerves. They aren't affected at all, gtfo the thread and stop saying its no big deal, or that we don't deserve to be promoted.

Nice Heiko, grats I was having fun in the solstice as well.

I really hope the fix the rookie promotions for the guys that did the requirements in week 13...I really wanted to try the late model stuff.

I've yet to see it in game yet, but so far I've got a dark green top and bottom with a matching yellow nose section to go with my license color on the skippy.

...I restrained myself from making the large purchase lol.

Right now I just grabbed Silverstone, the late model, and USA speedway. That'll give me 2 weeks to try the late model before buying new content, and Silverstone is used before my Bday in a few weeks...they just need to give me a D license now :]

what was pole for skippy at infineon long last season? I honestly can't remember whats a fast lap there lol. I know the fastest guys were in the 47's..but how far?

I just did a few laps and ran a 1:48.15. I was a bit shocked as I normally suck at Infineon. I can be quick in each turn, but doing it all in one lap hasn't ever really happened before.

On another note, I forced myself to do some oval races today...

I was going in with my rookie 2.5 something license woooo lol. I think I had only done one or two oval races previously. I wanted to get my promotion since it is so easy to get to 3.0. Anyways, I actually wound up having some fun. I'm pretty decent at it too. I'm actually contemplating grabbing the late model and running some next season instead of getting all the road course tracks I'm missing. I know I'd have more fun running the late model than the legends. All this started because of the appeal of the trucks...I know I'd enjoy something like that way more than the legend cars with their stupid 15 second laps and no horsepower.

I'd need the LM + 5 tracks = $90 + $50 for Road America and Silverstone for the mazda...and I really wanted to get Sebring too. So that'd bring the tally up toooo 165 before getting 20% off..ouch

I am forgetting however that as soon as the Lotus and the Daytona Prototype come out I'm selling a kidney and some blood to get whatever I need...maybe I should hold off on some stuff

Quote from Hyperactive :I am a bit torn between the good and bad points of the sr. First of all it doesn't imho tell anything about how "safe" a driver is and secondly it is really easy to keep it high enough to get to the highest lisences. Thirdly imho an sr type of gamish feature doesn't work very well in sim environment as the sr itself is not enough at all to teach what is wrong and what is correct, it isn't even imho systematic enough for giving out similar penalties in similar incidents. And as for positives I really like that people do less thoroughly idiotic things but you still se people stopping on racing line to be able to "esc out" or keep moving when they spin making it impossible to the people behind him to take avoidance. And there is nothing telling them that they could have avoided that, all that is done is that they get few incident points. Nothing learned

I used to be somewhat critical of the SR, or at least the 1x off track part.

I support it 100% after my first unofficial race last night in the radical. It was just an absolute joke. The SR is an invaluable part of iracing. Without it the quality of races and the realism of the on track behavior would go down the drain.
