I drive as hard as I can every lap, even in races

it often ends with me quitting early in a heaping pile of twisted and broken metal

T1 I brake a bit early, and get on the gas soon and try to get a run on people as I find the holes in the traffic. People normally go in too deep and get tangled with other people and have to lift mid corner, I'm trying to accelerate all the way through like normal.

how do you break through to the 103's with the rookie solstice (solskie? needs a shorter name) at lrp? It feels almost impossible

for turn 1 I brake at 3/2.5 and float it through in 3rd gear, double apex and get on the gas asap.

I don't use the brakes the rest of the course

I lift to get the car to turn in and then am back on the gas asap.

For the last 3 corners are you guys using 4th? I found it much more consistent and faster.

Is it possible to go through the last corner without lifting? I've almost done it a few times, but have to get the car turned first

I am NOT I repeat NOT an oval racer

I'm decently fast for the field I was in, 16.45 was my qualifying time I believe...but that just wasn't fun at all.

2 laps in, I'm on the inside going for third and 4th place comes down and runs into the side of me. (I watched the replay, I held the inside).

lap 3, first place spins right in front of me and I T-bone the ever living hell out of him.

lap 10 or whatever after resetting my car and going a lap down I get too far onto the apron and get sideways, rear ended and then plowed into...and thats probably the last time I'll ever race on the mini ovals lol.

I can't wait to see how many incident points I get...I was racking up those 4 pointers

its not like brake lights keep you from running into people

If you react to their brake lights alone, the lag of them coming on will still cause you to run into them anyways

Also, as soon as you get out of the solstice, the other cars don't even have brake lights..so its clearly not game breaking (not pointed at you jerte, I saw the sarcasm :] some people on the iracing forums are outraged about it though)

what I'm missing are split times...am I just not seeing them or are there really not any splits?

Did my first laps around lime rock park today. This week they're doing the full combination.

Its a pretty fun track, but real easy to screw up. I think it plays to mine, and the car's strength...which is floating through the corners at full throttle and minimal traction Its real neat when you hit the turn "the uphill" just right and rocket up the hill in 4th gear hoping you don't hang a tire in the grass. My worst turn is definitely the west bend...its quite difficult.

Anyways, I hop on the track kinda expecting that I'm going to have to slide the car everywhere from what I've read, but haven't seen any videos. Its the same old frustrating experience for me again...too stubborn to slow down...getting really good at the pit out and turn 1 :P

I get pretty consistent in the 1:05s and go online to see where I'm at. There weren't really any times for the track yet since the series just started (I'm assuming they used the chicane 2 weeks ago).

I run qualifying and put a really really clean lap together and get a 1:04.30 (i practiced a bit more before qualifying and got down to like 1:04.50). This puts me in first...in front of second who had a 1:05 something, and no one else qualified...I already had a pretty bad feeling.

This was only my second race, and coming off the high of an experience I had around laguna...I could already tell this one was a train wreck waiting to happen.

We started with a field of 10 cars, ended with 7...and only 3 on the lead lap. By the 3rd lap I think 7 people had reset and left the pits. I got a good jump and slid my way to a hefty lead at the beginning. Second place didn't feel like pushing it as hard on cold tires...but I guess my track learning exercise teaches you the first few on cold hides

Coming down the main straight, I see a reset car leaving the pits. I get past him, and he falls in front of 2nd place...my lead gets longer.

The race came down to me driving around for 20 something laps by myself with second place finishing 45 seconds back, and 3rd even more than that.
I cruised for all of the race fearing that if I pushed it I'd be into the wall with a broken car. I already put it off in turn 1 on the second lap, did not want to get any more safety rating docks, or lose my position.

It was nice to pick up a win, but would have been real exciting to push it with at least another car to drive with.

Quote from George Kuyumji :That was a nice read spanks, how was your first Race on an Oval?

I just started a couple days ago and have been focusing on the solstice around laguna. I was gone all day today, and will be gone tonight (4th of July for us Americans...gonna go blow shit up )

I tried the legend car around the south boston speedway, and put out a couple low 18's, but I fear that I don't quite have the technique down to keep up with the fast guys. I'm quite looking forward to racing on the oval as I've never done anything like that online before. Short ovals are completely different than the super speedway that we have on lfs.

I did read the driver's briefing btw, and thank you for explaining F3! I couldn't tell wtf any of that meant during the race, but had a much better understanding by the end. Its a pretty nice system.

I tried the legend car using the default road setup around laguna. (you have to click load and select road as the baseline) That thing is a monster on the road course! It was a blast to drive. If you're feeling let down by the slower pace of the solstice, hop in the legend car and give it a spin...I guarantee it'll wake you up.

haven't checked other cars to see if they're different too.

wow.

just had my first race in the rookie solstice, it was fantastic!

I went through qualifying and had quite a few incidents and docked my safety rating...ouch I'll have to hop onto a practice session before qualy starts now so I don't kill my rating every time.

The whole race procedure was very confusing at first. I didn't quite understand what was going on...I was just driving around and all of a sudden people started to disappear. I stopped on track and was taken to the pits.

(sorry, a bit long :shy

I click grid, and am happy to find I'm qualified 3rd. I didn't know where to find the positions before the race. We are all gridded up and lights come on. I slam it in to 1st, and off we go. I got a pretty good jump, and am on the inside headed to turn 1. I've got 1st in front, and second to my right. I brake a bit early and give it some room not really knowing what to expect with the cold tires, and am trying to get through cleanly. Through all of that, it appears I forgot what speed I was supposed to take the turn, and find myself in the gravel watching people go by.

I get on the track, and don't have a clue what position I'm in...all I know is I want to catch up. Turns out I fell back to 8th from 2nd/3rd.

I was chasing this one guy down until the very last lap. There was one point when I was on his bumper on the 6th or 7th lap going into the corkscrew. I was a good second faster than him around the track, and knew I should leave him some room under braking. He screws up bad in front of me and swings wide, I proceed on line and all of a sudden I see him start to cut back. I'm forced off track on the inside slightly and given a black flag I have to slam on the brakes and get it down to 15 mph so I can go again. He now has a 5 second lead again and I have 4 laps left...I was pissed

Turns out this whole time I was in 5th chasing 4th. On the 10th lap there is carnage on the main straight apparently involving one of the leaders. I move up to 4th. On the 11th and final lap, I'm catching up fast. I have the gap down to 1 second going into turn 2, and am doing all I can to catch up.

Coming down out of the corkscrew I see the guy in front of me, the one I've been chasing down for 8 laps gets into the back of 2nd place! He spins second out, and is forced to slow down to get untangled. I have to slam on the brakes to avoid the spun car, and dodge to the inside. We're flying towards turn 10...I'm on the inside and am fully along side him. I brake generously and sneak through and rocket out towards 11 and on to the finish line.

I pick up a 2nd place in my first race, and had a great time doing it. My safety rating is back up to 2.50, and hopefully it'll keep going up.

It was really a unique experience. I've not had racing like that on the computer ever. I've done a few league races in LFS, and pug races all the time. I sense a much greater amount of respect in iracing. People seem to be there because they want to have the best experience possible. I don't know if its the cost, the bulky and confusing registration format, the safety rating, or some other unexplainable thing, but there was an atmosphere of respect (for the car and the other racers) and competition that I haven't gotten in any lfs pug race.

I'm actually sad when I keep remembering that its a monthly subscription and daftly expensive to get any more content

Quite happy I gave it a go for at least a month though. Good to know lfs will be waiting for me when I get back

Another side note. It was excellent to be able to do qualifying at 8 pm, and race at 10 pm...on lfs I might find 3 drift servers and ctra with 2 people in it. I just raced with a full field for a solid 11 laps and feel very content. If I tried to race on lfs at 10 pm I'd give up and wake up around 10 in the morning and hop on cone dodgers or ctra and have an excellent race, but at a much less convenient time.

Woohoo, 1:49.5 around laguna in the rookie solstice...I might be ready for a race here soon. I got some consistency going too, can do multiple laps in a row now zomg!

I would love a caterham or some other kit car with about the same power as the solstice, but purpose built to like turn and stuff

Not really sure why everyone is bashing the solstice though...aside from the gearing I really love the thing (really gotta fly it through the corners to keep it in the powerband in 3rd) But hey, I'll race anything I guess

just had my second complete lap at laguna...

1:50.6 something from 1:51.3

I had a couple flubs too that lap. I think my next completed lap out of 25 attempts might be in the 49s!

A decent improvement, except I'd rather have 20 laps all strung together at 1:52 than 2 laps that are near race speed :P

I'm not very good at slowing down...especially since I know the track already I want to go balls to the wall every turn

Also bbt, I agree...some things are like pre s1 material and others are a bit more advanced than what we've got here.

I'm having so much fun in the solstice! It feels pretty damn good physics wise. I have a decent sense of what the car is doing, and am having a blast figuring out how to go faster. The tracks are awesome. They just feel different than what we have in lfs, can't really put my finger on it...but it feels more like a real circuit than some of the ones we've got. (and not just because they are real circuits! its something else that adds to the immersion)

I probably did 15 laps in the rookie solstice before I got one "clean" one in. First full lap was 1:51.3, not too bad. I'm getting a pretty good feel for the car. The transmission is really bothering me...seriously, there needs to be a gear 2.5 or something.

The thing thats really killing me at the moment is the sense of speed. I know I'm going fast, especially once I'm on the brakes hurdling past my turnin spot into the wall. The hard part is telling HOW fast I'm going. I think this partially has to do with being in 3rd gear for over half the track.

Also I need to get a lot better at braking, and finding better turnins so I'm not running over the inside of the turn all the time.

I'm not a single game kind of guy, don't really get too attached to racing games...I like to have lots (LFS is on top of the list though).

AAAAAAAA too much fun. I think the best way to have fun with racing games is variety. Keep it new and interesting.

Quote : Are we talking about the left turn where the exit is the start of the uphill section? I think that's the only corner I'm getting right.

Turn 5 is the one before the one you described. Turn 6 is one of my favorite on the circuit

when I got a ride along at laguna seca, turn 5 was described as a progressive turnin corner

You're feeding in more and more steering angle until you reach the apex, and then you floor it and wind out.

Its not like most of the corners there where you turn in all the way at the beginning.

I think if you try turning in a bit sooner and slowly feed in the steering input you can get rid of some of the understeer problems

I was so pumped to play

that doesn't sound too farfetched jonesy.

These small roadsters with pretty even weight distribution rely a lot on the forward weight transfer

Do you not get any suspension adjustment? I have never had any desire to go sailing around laguna seca before.

I've been screwed multiple times by the % system, and even for road racing would love an option to just replace one tire.

Some tracks only cook one of the fronts, or just the rears etc, and its actually beneficial to keep the other tires warm.

The track is very old, and is shorter than some of the newer tracks. All tracks need to be updated and retrofit.

However, in this case, it was not the track's fault.

The first explosion definitely knocked scott unconcious and he had no control of the car from that point on.

When the body blew off the parachutes were no longer usable, and he was not applying the brake.

Cars traveling 300+ there have stopped with no chutes before hitting the sand. Not to say that its an acceptable layout to have a concrete wall at the end, but there is enough room to stop in an emergency situation.

The car was launched over the sand and wall into the forest. It took them a very long time to find everything. It was a horrible crash, and a very sad thing to see.

Scott was a great man, and a good friend of the family. He will be missed. RIP

Quote from tristancliffe :I've never really found inside wheel spin to be a problem, and the handling is a joy - I wouldn't want to muck around too much with adding a diff that will barely improve traction but ruin the handling... Unless you are a superb driver I reckon the tradeoff would cost you time, not gain it.

thats what I was trying to say

even with the torsen that puts more power to the inside wheel (and can make you faster around corners), I've never had the thing spin the tires, or tire, out of a corner.
spanks
S2 licensed
for a miata, you won't have that much power going to the ground.

Its my understanding that you want the diff to be as open as possible for best handling. You don't want to bind up your nice handling miata with a super tight diff

Unless you're going with an aftermarket diff, the mx-5 will come with a tornsen. The torsen is actually going to send MORE power to the inside tire until it starts to slip, and then it'll transfer power back to the outside. If the speed of the inside tire is greater than the preset ratio in the diff, it'll lock the diff.
